What is the SHSAT format in 2026?
A 3-hour, fully digital, computer-adaptive test with 50 ELA questions and 50 Math questions, Technology-Enhanced Items, and navigation rules that differ from the old paper exam — per NYC Public Schools.
NYC's official 2026 SHSAT page confirms what families must prepare for now — not the test most prep books were written for.
SHSAT format timeline: 2024 → 2025 → 2026
| Era | When | Medium | Questions (typical) | Scoring / navigation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper SHSAT | Before the digital transition | Paper booklet / answer sheet | Older materials often showed 57 per section | Linear test; students could review within the paper test |
| Digital fixed-form SHSAT | Fall 2025 | DOE-provided computer | 57 per section in the 2025 digital format | Digital tools and TEIs; not computer-adaptive |
| Digital adaptive SHSAT | Fall 2026 | DOE-provided computer | 50 ELA + 50 Math | Difficulty adapts; navigation is more restricted |
Note: Current NYC SHSAT Portal practice test directions we reviewed now show 100 questions total: 50 ELA and 50 Math. Older prep books and blog posts may still reference 57 + 57 — see 57 vs. 50 explained.
After the paper era — digital delivery
Paper testing ended for general SHSAT administration. Students now take the SHSAT on DOE-provided computers at their school or a weekend site.
Legacy content to treat as historical: prep book outdated, checklist sections that mention pencils on test day.
Digital fixed-form era — Digital delivery + TEIs
The digital format introduced on-screen tools and Technology-Enhanced Items, including drag-and-drop, grid-in, multi-select, inline dropdowns, clickable text, and number-line interactions.

Fall 2026 — Computer-adaptive
Difficulty adjusts based on student responses. Same standards and item types — different difficulty path and scoring model.
