Key Takeaways

  • Universal digital tools are available to all SHSAT test-takers on DOE-provided computers, including zoom, highlighting, answer elimination, note-taking, and other built-in supports.
  • ELLs and eligible former ELLs receive double time: 360 minutes total, with two 15-minute breaks after the first 180 minutes.
  • Students with IEPs or 504 Plans receive the testing accommodations listed in their plans, unless a specific accommodation is not needed or not allowed for the SHSAT.
  • Paper versions are available only for the extremely limited number of students whose IEP or 504 Plan requires paper access. It is not a general preference option.
  • Students should practice with the Student Readiness Tool and official online practice tests before test day.

What on-screen tools does every SHSAT student get in 2026?

Every SHSAT student gets built-in digital tools on DOE-provided computers — not only students with IEPs or 504 Plans. Per NYC Public Schools, universal accessibility features include zoom, highlighting, and note-taking. The SHSAT preparation page also lists tools such as Highlighter, Answer Eliminator, Notepad, digital Pencil, Line Reader Mask, and ELA glossed words / pop-up definitions. On Math, students also have access to the Equation Editor.

These supports are for everyone. Students should practice with them before test day using the Student Readiness Tool (SRT) and the official online practice tests on the SHSAT Portal (four fully functional practice tests, not just one form).

Answer Eliminator (not just “striking through text”)

NYCPS calls the cross-out tool the Answer Eliminator — it lets students eliminate answer options they know are incorrect. That is different from highlighting a passage or jotting notes in the Notepad. Learning the difference before test day saves seconds on a timed exam.

How long is the SHSAT with accommodations?

Standard time: 180 minutes total.

ELLs and eligible former ELLs are granted extended testing time totaling 360 minutes, with two 15-minute breaks after the first 180 minutes — not optional “may receive” time.

Students with IEPs or 504 Plans receive the testing accommodations listed in their plan, unless a specific accommodation is unnecessary due to test design/administration or not allowed for the SHSAT. Timing follows the approved plan — confirm details with the school counselor before the registration deadline.

Our how long is the SHSAT article covers pacing for standard time — pair it with this post if you have accommodations.

Pacing changes with extended time

  • Same navigation rules apply — Math forward-only.
  • Extra time helps reading-heavy ELA, not unlimited second passes in Math.
  • Paper versions: extremely limited exception

Paper versions are available only for the extremely limited number of students whose IEP or 504 Plan includes approved accommodations that require a paper version to access the exam. Otherwise, the SHSAT is administered on computer without exception — paper is not a general preference or backup option.
