SHSAT prep timeline

The most effective prep follows a phased approach based on how much time you have.

Phase 1

6–8 months before test

Baseline & diagnosis

  • Take a full-length practice test to establish your starting score
  • Identify your weakest topics using the 33-skill breakdown
  • Learn the SHSAT format — especially Revising/Editing and Scrambled Paragraphs
  • Set a target school and score goal
Phase 2

3–5 months before test

Topic-by-topic skill building

  • Work through weak Math topics: algebra, ratios, number sense
  • Practice ELA question types: R/E passage corrections, RC inference questions
  • Take a second practice test to measure improvement
  • Adjust your study plan based on which topics have improved most
Phase 3

4–8 weeks before test

Speed and full-test endurance

  • Practice pacing — 60 min ELA, 90 min Math, with 30-min ELA return
  • Take 2–3 more full-length tests under timed conditions
  • Focus on eliminating careless errors, not learning new concepts
  • Review wrong answers systematically — not just the topic, but the mistake type
Final week

7 days before test

Rest and light review

  • Do light review only — no new content
  • Review your personal list of common mistake types
  • Sleep 8–9 hours the week before test day
  • Know your testing site, arrival time, and what to bring
