Practice Test A Math: 2025 vs. 2026 — Plus How Practice Test C Compares

NYC's SHSAT Practice Test A Math went from 57 to 50 questions. Same 180 minutes, same TestNav formats — but topic weight shifts. Full 2025 vs. 2026 A comparison and 2026 Practice Test C Math vs. A for parents.

Key Takeaways

  • Practice Test A Math 2025 had 57 questions; the 2026 portal test has 50 — same TestNav delivery, seven fewer slots, still 180 minutes for the full test.
  • 2025 Practice Test A Math leaned on ratio chains, unit conversion, word problems, and algebraic manipulation; circles were light (about one geometry item in the 57-question set).
  • 2026 Practice Test C Math is brand-new official material — heavier probability (Q33–37 block), more fractions/percents TEI, and three circle items — not a reskin of Practice Test A.
  • Math is forward-only on TestNav: no going back once you advance — same rule on 2025, 2026 A, and 2026 C.
  • Compare misses by 14 math skill topics, not raw 42/57 vs. 42/50 scores.

If your child finished Practice Test A and assumes they are done with official math practice, they are not — Practice Test C is the new math release on the portal.

This guide covers Math only (not ELA), mapped from TestNav screenshots and SHSATlab blueprints. For ELA cuts on Practice Test A, see Practice Test A: 2025 vs. 2026 — every ELA change. For ELA on Practice Test C vs. A, see Practice Test C vs. Practice Test A ELA.

2026 Practice Test A per-question Math transcript is in progress; format counts follow the 2025 digital test scaled to 50.

Parent takeaway: Your child is not facing a new skill list. All three forms still hit the same 14 math topic areas SHSATlab uses in diagnostics (30 topics total with ELA). What changes is how many questions per topic — especially on Practice Test C.

Math navigation (unchanged — and easy to miss)

These rules apply to Practice Test A and Practice Test C on the portal:

  • You cannot go forward without an answer — select A–D, complete a TEI, or enter a grid-in/value.
  • Math is forward-only — no returning to a previous math question after you click ahead.
  • Prep implication: There is no “skip and come back” in Math. Train a best guess and move on habit. Full rules: SHSAT navigation rules changed in 2026.

    Practice Test A Math: 2025 (57) vs. 2026 (50)

    What stayed the same

  • TestNav delivery — no formula sheet; diagrams may not be to scale; graphs to scale.
  • Question types — multiple choice, grid-in (typed numeric/fraction answers), and technology-enhanced items (TEIs) interleaved through the section (not bunched at the end).
  • Core skill families — ratios and unit rates, algebraic expressions, linear equations, word problems, probability, charts, coordinate graphs, inequalities, geometry.
  • No guessing penalty — answer every question (and you must answer to move on).
  • What changed: seven fewer questions

The 2026 portal breadcrumb shows MATH / 50 OF 50. The 2025 digital capture showed 57 math items (numbered Q58–114 on the full test).

We have not yet published a question-by-question list of which seven 2025 items were cut on 2026 Practice Test A Math (2026 screenshot transcript in progress). For prep today:

  • Treat 2026 A as the same math test, tighter — not a new syllabus.
  • Use topic-level misses from a 2026 run, not 2025 question numbers, for study plans.
  • Use 2025 Practice Test A for extra reps on specific formats (see TEI table below).
  • Format mix: 2025 Practice Test A Math (verified)

    FormatCountQuestion # (2025 full test)
    Multiple choice44Most items
    Grid-in7Q60, Q61, Q67, Q72, Q86, Q94, Q114

    Drag expression boxes1Q76

Prep note: If your child only practiced multiple choice math, they are under-prepped for 2026. Grid-ins and TEIs are normal on every official digital form.

2025 Practice Test A Math — topic map (all 57 questions)

SHSATlab tags each item to one of 14 math skills. Below is the 2025 Practice Test A inventory (one primary topic per question).

    2026 A column scales 2025 counts × 50/57 (rounded) until the 2026 item-level transcript is complete.

Reading the shift: Shortening Practice Test A does not remove ratios or algebra — it removes about seven repeats across crowded buckets. Practice Test C is where the mix changes: more probability, more percents, and circles show up three times.

Practice Test C Math (2026) — what is actually new

Practice Test C is not Practice Test A with different numbers. We mapped all 50 items from TestNav (48 stems verified; Q35 and Q46 need recapture).

Format mix on Practice Test C (verified)

    FormatCountExamples

    Box-plot drag-fill1Q49 — range, IQR, difference

The probability block (Practice Test C)

    Questions 33–37 cluster probability skills:

  • Sampling to estimate counts in a bag (Q33)
  • Tree diagram — 2 from class A, 1 from B (Q34)
  • Cards — hearts left in deck (Q36)
  • Probability table — most likely candy flavor (Q37)
  • On 2025 Practice Test A, probability appeared four times in 57 questions (~7%). On Practice Test C, the cluster alone is five verified items in 50 (~10%+). That is closer to Practice Test B’s heavy probability weight than to Practice Test A.

Prep implication: A child who aced Practice Test A math can still lose points on Practice Test C if probability was under-drilled.

Circles and percents (Practice Test C)

    Practice Test C includes:

  • Q20 — table TEI matching $A=25pi$ and $C=5pi$ to the correct circle
  • Q30 — percent of Honor Society from 2,000 seniors
  • Q44 — acceptable min/max width at ±4% (dropdown TEI)
  • Q45 — percent increase $10 → $12
  • Q50 — patio circumference with $r=5$, $pi=3.14$
  • 2025 Practice Test A had percent items (Q102 metal thickness) and no dedicated circle circumference MC in the 57-question map. Do not let your child treat circles as “rare” because A was light on them.

What did NOT change (and still matters)

  • 14 math topics — still the SHSAT math universe; see 30 topics from official practice tests.
  • Ratios + unit rates — still the highest-leverage family on Practice Test A (2025 data: 11 combined in 57 questions).
  • Grid-ins interleaved — not a final “free response block” at the end.
  • Forward-only Math — pacing strategy must account for no revisits.
  • 180 minutes for the full test — same clock whether you take 57+57 or 50+50.
  • How families should use all three tests

Do not convert “38/57” on 2025 math to “38/50” on 2026 without context. Use percent correct by topic or a diagnostic that tags all 14 math skills.

Minimum official math plan for 2026:

  • Practice Test A 2026 Math — timed, forward-only rules.
  • Practice Test C 2026 Math — timed, especially if A felt “easy” on probability.
  • Log missed topics, not only raw score.
  • Drill TEIs until grid-ins and keypads feel routine.
  • Quick checklist after reading this

  • Take Practice Test A 2026 Math on the NYC SHSAT Portal — timed, on a computer.
  • Take Practice Test C 2026 Math — second official form, different topic weights.
  • Practice answer-before-advance and no going back in Math.
  • List missed topics (ratios, probability, expressions, charts, etc.).
  • If probability or circles were misses on C, drill those even if A looked fine.
  • Pair with 57 vs. 50 overview, Practice Test A ELA 2025 vs. 2026, and Practice Test C vs. A ELA.
